Confessions of A Writer: Amanda Jasper

Today I am featuring another one of my critique partners, Amanda Jasper. I will be handing over the blog to her today so she can share with you her responses to The Confessions of a Writer Tag.

Before I pass things over to Amanda today, I just want to take a moment to say how much I adore working with her.

Amanda, knowing you has made me a better writer and I am so grateful for all the time and effort you put into your critiques. I think it is so amazing that we met on Twitter and I can’t believe I am this lucky to get to work with you and be a part of your process!

So without further delay, I give you Amanda’s Confessions of a Writer.

Confessionsof aWriter (1)

It was, but I had suffered from writers block  for ten years. Overcoming that was one of the best thing that happened to me.

Sci-Fi and Fantasy across all age categories.

Right now I’m revising my YA Rumpelstiltskin retelling Straw Salt Gold. I’m also drafting a nameless Sci-Fi MS filled with all my favorite things – action, badass ladies and chase scenes.

When  I was little I wrote a bunch of Babysitter Club knockoffs that were maybe 10 pages.  And when I was 13 I wrote a sci-fi detective story that was maybe 40 pages. So nerdy books have always been in my blood. 🙂

5Creating new things, new worlds, new people, new ideas.

Doubting yourself.

Omg I have no idea! I do have opinions on favorite couples though… Lol.

When is the best time for you to write (morning or night)? I usually write for an hour after work and between 2 and 4 hours on the weekends. I’m a morning person so on the weekends I get a lot done between 7 and 9. I feel like my brain has the most plasticity at that time.

I studied design in college at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I knew I wanted a creative job, and I love design. My education was amazing, it taught me how to work hard and be disciplined and how to handle really negative critique. 🙂

Spelling errors.  Because I have terrible grammar and I work really hard to overcome that. But I’m still so bad at it.

I love Anne Lamotts book Bird by Bird which has so much good advice, but here’s my favorite bit : “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.”  Seriously, go! Read it!

Don’t stop! You owe it to yourself to keep going.

I have a bunch of craft books on my kindle that I really like – The Emotional Thesaurus, Story by Robert McKee.  I also have a big file with a ton of bookmarks that I refer to.

I’m a huge huge reader. I love history and history podcasts. I’m crafty and I love to knit. I’m a runner and I love long walks. And I love my friends and hang out with them excessively.

15That’s like asking me to pick between my children. Thank god for goodreads recording all of my 5 star books. Salt and Storm was my favorite YA Book this year, it had literally everything and anything I could want. My other three favorites were The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert Caro, The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell, and Persuasion by Jane Austen.

Obviously Furious 7. If you haven’t seen it then a. I don’t know who you are and b. you should really see it. I even had a Furious 7 themed birthday brunch this year.  I mean it has everything. The Rock, badass fighting, people driving cars out of planes, people driving cars through buildings, plot holes, oh and The Rock.

Nicolette, these questions are cruel. And now you’re seeing what a total nerd I am. Ok, let’s do this. Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin,  The Wall Around Eden by Joan Slonczewski, The Ruins of Ambrai by Melanie Rawn, Emma by Jane Austen, Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of favorite books.

Ursula K Le Guin!

Just to keep pushing forward. Which can be so hard some days.
