The 7/7/7 Challenge | A Writers Tag

The 7/7/7 Challenge Writers Tag

I saw this writing challenge originally on John’s blog @ Am I Doing This Right and thought it would be a fun thing to share and tag other writers into, because everyone knows how much I love tags and tagging people. ^.^

Before we get into the tag, be sure to check out John’s original post as well! He and his daughter are writing a middle-grade novel together titled THE LAST PRINCESS and it sounds amazing!

The 7/7/7 Challenge Rules:

  • Go to page 7 of your work-in-progress
  • Scroll down to line #7
  • Share the next 7 lines of your manuscript in a blog post
  • Tag 7 other writers (with blogs) to continue the challenge.

My current work-in-progress is titled DREAMWEAVER. It is a YA fantasy/dystopia. ^.^

Tristan is the Crown Prince of Aguillon. He is a Dreamweaver. A genetic anomaly among a nation of people cast out for their lack of magic hundreds of years ago. Caught in the middle of a war, he’s just captured the most infamous soldier in the seven kingdoms—Nix.

Nix is deadly. She is brutal. She is feared. She also has a convenient case of amnesia, and without her memory, she has just lost her only bargaining chip—information about the enemy. For her prior crimes against the crown, she faces a death penalty. That is until a band of mercenaries sent by the elves busts her out of the castle.

While on the run, Nix is haunted by flashes of memories of who she used to be and, so far, she doesn’t like what she sees. Overwhelmed by guilt for all that she has done, she craves redemption. She sets her hopes on being able to find renewed purpose amongst the elves.

Tristan has other plans in mind. Rather than hunt her down like the animal she is, Tristan thinks he can manipulate her through her dreams, and convince her to come back on her own. After all, there is no such thing as fair play in the games of war. Besides that, she could prove to be a powerful weapon against his enemies. What he doesn’t expect is for his former history with her to start to muddle things. Just how deep can he go before he is in way over his head?

Nix and Tristan come from two completely different worlds; one that detests those who do not possess magic, and one that has integrated magic with technology. Told in alternating first-person points-of-view, their stories collide, intertwining and weaving together as they fight for what they believe is right.

Accepting the 7/7/7 Challenge:

Every seven days, a panel of the ceiling opens and a box is lowered into my prison. Every seven days, I’m expected to walk into this box. It’s the only space where my reflection doesn’t stare back at me, where I am completely alone. Every seven days, the waters of the heavens pour down over my body and I try to scrub away the pain I feel inside, the gnawing hollowness I feel at not knowing who I am and not knowing why I am here. Every seven days, I try to wash away my fears, hoping one day I’ll watch as they circle down the drain as if they never before existed. Maybe I’ll go with them too. Every seven days, inside the rain box, I am allowed to escape myself, to escape the silver room of mirrors that reflect back to me everything I don’t want to see about myself.

So, there you have it! I’m very excited with the direction Dreamweaver has taken and am almost done re-writing it. Right now, I’m working with two of my CPs to polish what I currently have ready. Hello Bree and Tristen, I *heart* you! ^.^

And now we move on to what is probably my favorite part of tags, the tagging!! As a general rule, I love getting to read everyone’s responses! But this tag has me particularly excited because the 7/7/7 Challenge is a chance to get a sneak peak at all my writerly friends current WIPs!!! And this makes me SO excited!! Without further adieu…

I choose you!!! Pikachu!

  1. Haha! You do love tagging people, Nicolette. :p You tagged me like… three times in a week. I was drowning in tags. Haha! Though this does sound quite cool. (Now, I just need to pick which novel-in-progress to post about. Hm…)

This book sounds quite interesting and the excerpt is mysterious so as to tantalize the tastebuds. ^.^ Should be an interesting read, Nicolette! ^.^

Oh ho! I see how it is! Trying to sneak a peak at what I’m writing. How dastardly of you! *glares* *covets manuscripts* You can’t have them! No one can have them! *runs away and peaks out from behind a tree*

      1. I think you and I have a skewed perception of our work. I think we both think our own work is bleh but it’s actually good. Idk. I’m going on a limb here. Lol. Don’t skewer me! 💀

      2. Heehee! I think I’ll let others be the determinant of whether my writing is any good or not. ^.^ (And it’s a difficult world. We are either self-deprecating or arrogant writers. *sigh*)

      3. For whatever reason, it’s not letting me reply to the comment I want to, BUT I think I can vouch for both of your lovely manuscripts! Or at least the beginnings. 🙂

So no more self-deprecation, you two! ❤

  2. Thanks for the tag!

I love that section of DREAMWEAVER (but you knew that already)! 😉 I’m so thrilled you decided to share it on your blog!

And did I mention how much I love your story?! BECAUSE I DO! I can’t wait to see how Tristan and Nix interact! Do I get it from Nix’s POV first or Tristan’s? Nevermind, I’ll find out. 😉 YAY!

    1. YAY!! Thanks, I was super excited that the “seven days” section lined up with the seventh page and seventh line thing. LOL. Sorta perfect.

AND, yes, you did mention it and I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR mentioning it all over again because sometimes I can be an insecure little penguin and I just need that little boost every now and then! *hearts*

I sent you chapters 4-9 right?! You’ll find out in those pages… MWAHAHAHA *evil writer cackle*

    1. Thanks Kat! As I’m sure you can appreciate and understand, you’re encouragement means the WORLD to me!! I really hope to be able to share this story soon and that people will enjoy as much as I do, lol!
And btw, I loved your set up in Dreamers. I was able to read the first 2 chapters before getting interrupted by student walk-ins. I loved that first chapter’s pacing, where you left off on that cliff-hanger-ish ending (which is awesome) and then the exploration of the dream in the second. Super cool!! Also, you had soo much voice right off the bat and that is super hard to accomplish (I find), so that was really refreshing and just amazing.

      1. I can’t wait to discover more of your story! Your set up sounds so intriguing!! Whenever you decidd to share, you can be sure you’ll have a fan in me.
Thanks so much for checking it out!!! I am SO happy to hear you liked it. A lot of the chapters still need editing, but I am glad that you liked the beginning. 🙂 Pacing can be so difficult to get right!

      2. Oh god! I know! Pacing is so hard! But then again all aspects of writing are challenging, it just depends on what day it is and what aspect is being a jerk for the day! Lol. All the love girl! Thanks for the positive vibes! ❤️

      3. True! Depending on my mood everything can be difficult hahaha Sonetimes it’s the dialogue, then the description and then pacing …
I am always rooting for you! ❤

      4. YAS! I am the same way!! Sometimes my characters run off with the story…

Awww!! You just made my heart glow!!! You made my day so bright!! I’m rooting for you too! ❤️
